RAMRAO PATIL HISTORY

Earlier, Medhekot was built on this island, so this island was called Medhekot Island. Ramrao Patil was the head of the Koli community. At the same time, he was managing the Patilki of Janjira Island. In the 15th century, they built the island to protect the Koli community from pirates. After obtaining permission from the Sultan of Ahmednagar, he built this construction.

After that he disobeyed the Sultan’s orders. To take revenge, in 1489 Sultan attacked Rajaram and sent Piram Khan for attack. Due to the strong fortifications of the fort, it was not easy to attack and conquer this fort. So Piram Khan himself entered the fort as a merchant and stayed here for the night.

At that time, when Patil was asleep after organizing the night feast and all the Koli soldiers were drunk and asleep after the night feast, Piram Khan’s soldiers attacked them and captured the island.

MARATHA HISTORY

Janjira in Raigad district is an impregnable fort among the large coastal forts that Maharashtra enjoys. Janjira means fort surrounded by sea. Apart from the construction and the surrounding sea, the fort was impregnable due to all the 572 CANNONS on the banks of the Murud fort. Among these was a particularly large and long-range Kalal Bangdi cannon.

During Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s reign, this fort remained invincible till the end for the Swarajya of Maharashtra. The Siddhi of Janjira (janjira fort owner) was originally a sailor, strong and warrior. He fought with his life. Many people tried to win Zanjira but they could not succeed. Even Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj could not get possession of the fort. Janjira remained invincible for 330 years till 1947.

Sambhaji Maharaj had built a strong fort called Padmadurg at a distance of five to six kilometers from this fort to capture it. But still it was not possible for Maharaja to win the Janjira of Murud. The fortifications of this Jaladurg type fort are so vast that it has a gateway to the ocean, 19 towering towers and the distance between two towers is more than 90 feet. Janjira Fort is also known as Fort Mehrup aka Fort Janjira.

SAMBHAJI RAJA’s CAMPAIGN OF MURUD

Janjira an impregnable fortress that no one could ever conquer. But there was a time in history when SAMBHAJI MAHARAJ was almost to win this fort. Just as Lord Sri Ramachandra built Ram Setu to ride over Lanka, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj built a setu in the raging ocean. At that time, the king attacked Janjira with the army of Satara and three hundred boats.

Sambhaji Maharaj’s guns started firing from the shore. The cannon balls of the Marathas were reaching the fort. Siddhi Khairat Khan, Siddhi Kasam Khan were on the chain at this time. This could not stop Shambhuraj. Now when Janjira was in hand, Aurangzeb made a move. He realized that if Janjira fell into the hands of the Marathas, the Sambhaji kings would rule the sea. Aurangzeb sent a warlord named Hasan Ali to march on Swarajya. Hasan Ali, Aurangzeb’s chief, had started coming towards Raigad via Kalyan – Bhiwandi with an army of 40,000 soldiers. Therefore, the Maharaja had to leave the Janjira campaign half-way and return to Raigad to protect the Swarajya.

Due to this incident, Janjira did not come into the hands of the Marathas.

INFORMATION OF MURUD JANJIRA FORT

The grand palace of Hukum Surul Khan in the center of the fort is in ruins today. There are two large water tanks at the fort. Earlier there were three residential quarters in the fort. Two of these neighborhoods belonged to Muslims and one belonged to others. Earlier, the fort was inhabited by soldiers, workers and sailors. After the end of Rajashraya, those residents were displaced from here.

Video of Murud Janjira Fort

From the ramparts of Janjira, the vast expanse of Murud can be seen. Kasa aka Padmadurg fort built in the sea and Samrajgad fort on the coast can also be seen from here. Looking at Janjira Fort, which remained impenetrable and inaccessible for 330 years, the history of many eras in history melts before our eyes. A visit to Janjira after studying the history of this fort will surely make it memorable and unique.

Such an invincible and impregnable fort, succeeded by 20 Siddhi rulers, with Siddhi Muhammad Khan being the last Siddhi Sultan, merged with the Indian Union on 3 April 1948, 330 years after the formation of that state.
